Current Threat: Hurricane Dorian

Americans are all hoping Hurricane Dorian is not a repeat of Hurricane Katrina, Sandy or any of the other major hurricanes to make landfall in the United States or a Territory. The current trajectory is alarming as it is expected to move up the Eastern Coast of the United States from now until Saturday.

Magnitude:

Below is a list of the 10 costliest Atlantic hurricanes in U.S. History, and it demonstrates that these storms can do massive amounts of damage to the communities where they hit shore:

Government Action/Plan:

The Federal Government has come a long way from the days of Katrina. The GSA is already mobilizing and alerting approved transportation service providers (amongst other things) to be ready. FEMA relies on the GSA for a large portion of its preparedness and post disaster resource gathering efforts.

Being a Part of the System:

GSA - Below is an example of how the GSAs automated disaster recovery system works for dealing out disaster relief contracts. As you can see by this diagram, this system is very active and fluid. You can tell by looking at the nature of the functionality of the system that using outside vendors who are not pre-approved with an understanding of how the system works is not practical and potentially detrimental to the system as a whole.

It is too late to join the GSA for this storm, good or bad, but if you would like to help in future storms joining with the GSA and FEMA is the most productive way possible.

Non-GSA - Firms that want to help but are not on schedule can sign up with FEMA, and bid on opportunities on FBO.gov. As a government consulting firm, we took many calls from Americans wanting to pitch in with Sandy relief efforts. Many are willing to help out their fellow countrymen/countrywomen but were not able to because the FEMA supplier / FBO.gov process does not lend itself well to the first few weeks of the disaster recovery. But it is a way to get involved.

GSA Schedules

For those looking to become 8(a) certified, getting on GSA Schedule at the same time is often a wise move that exponentially increases the future business development opportunities for most firms. I recommend consulting with an industry expert on the possibilities that can exist for your small business. Advance GSA is a phone call away at (303)810-4580.
