8(a) Capabilities Statements

One way that firms are judged by potential federal agencies/clients is by using their Capabilities Statements. Using a few examples from construction firms located in the Midwestern part of the United States, I will expound on what is good, better and best.

I believe that Capabilities Statements do matter, I do not think that this is a critical success factor for 8(a) firms. However, I do think as you review them the firms with higher sales amounts tended to have better statements.

Key Elements of the Best Capabilities Statements

  1. Telling the reader what industry the firm is in on the first line. This way the reader knows they are looking at a correct profile for their needs.
  2. Let the user know immediately that they were currently an active 8(a) and the duration of time they were expected to hold their certification for.
  3. They stressed their back-office capability, they may have found that not having good paperwork is a complaint that many have of federal contractors, and therefore wanted to remove this concern.
  4. They talk about how they oversee and complete jobs.
  5. Direct the user to the company website.

I have included seven, sample Capabilities Statements for you to review with the firms’ accompanying sales. This is only one of the details when it comes to being a successful 8(a) firm. However, it has been my experience that attention to detail in general when combined with a good product/service can create a juggernaut.

If you have interest in exploring how an 8(a) Certification can bolster your future business development opportunities, or would like help marketing your existing 8(a) small business, I always recommend contacting an industry expert such as ez8a or Advance 8a. Neither charge for an initial consultation.
