8(a) Firms Average Sales
According to the SBA, there are a little over 5,800 8(a) Certified firms in the United States. 28% of these firms are located in Virginia, Maryland, and DC (the greater DC area). The firms in the DC area, on average, make over $7.0MM per year in annual federal sales. The firms located outside of DC still do well, but have lower sales of $4.8MM per year in annual federal sales.
Outside of DC Outliers
Four states outperform even the 8(a) DC Beltway firms. They are Alaska, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Vermont.
8(a) Opportunities
Other states have with such limited competition that an 8(a) firm can still do very well by just obtaining the contracts in their own backyard. In other cases, the firm may need a DC office in order to take full advantage of its 8(a) Certification.
